A Unique Forest Museum
The Maniwaki region has earned a reputation as a leader in fighting forest fires as developed by the specialists in the field, Sopfeu - an acronym for the “Société de protection des forêts contre le feu”. Over the years, the Sopfeu has performed valuable research and perfected techniques for battling forest fires. Delegations from around the world come to the Sopfeu to study its techniques in fire prevention and fire fighting.

The interpretation centre in the Château Logue is a testimonial to those whose time, talent and energy have gone into protecting our forests for the benifit of generations to come. Discover how man’s relationship with the forest and fire has evolved and how we have used our accumulated knowledge to better protect our valuable and shared resource.

Observation Tower
Erected in 1910 by J.N.O. Fenderson, the first forest fire observation tower in Quebec located near Lake Matapédia at an altitude of 518 meters. On a clear day, a forest ranger was said to be able to watch over 260,000 hectares of forest from the top of that tower.

Several decades ago, the province of Quebec had more than 500 observation towers in use. Several of those were located in the forests around the Maniwaki area. Now you can climb up a 80 feet high newly reconstructed tower at the Interpretation Centre next to the Chateau Logue.
